The short answer

Yes, you can change the difficulty. The PlayStation Store page for the PS5 version lists Adjustable Difficulty as an accessibility feature: you pick a different preset level and the overall challenge drops. Steam lists Adjustable Difficulty as an official feature too.

What the official pages do not list is how many levels exist or what each one changes. Pre-release hands-on reports consistently describe three combat difficulties, story, normal and nightmare. Treat that as press reporting, not an official list, and confirm it in the in-game settings menu once you can play.

Before you start, decide one thing: combat is not the main course here. Officially, stealth, avoiding enemies and luring them with sound are all viable. A higher difficulty usually means tighter resources and a worse penalty for being caught. It does not add new systems.

If you mainly want the 1996 St. Amelia story, start low and spend less time running away.

Accessibility features the publisher lists

The PS5 page groups the accessibility features. The published list includes:

  • Gameplay: Adjustable Difficulty (Basic), Simplified Quick Time Events, Game Pausing, Manual Saving
  • Subtitles: advanced subtitle options, clear subtitles, large subtitles, captions
  • Audio: volume controls for individual sources, 3D audio
  • Controls: controller remapping (Basic), stick sensitivity, stick inversion, turning off vibration and trigger effects
  • Comfort: options that reduce effects which may cause visual discomfort

These matter in a first-person horror game. Limited visibility and close-range scares are part of the design. If camera motion or dark rooms wear you down, set these before you start instead of quitting halfway to dig through menus.

What is still unknown before launch

  • The names of the difficulty levels, what each one changes, and whether you can switch mid-run are all unpublished. We do not use leaks or datamined values.
  • The link between difficulty and endings is press reporting only. The publisher has not explained a rule, so this page does not tell you which setting unlocks which ending.
  • The accessibility list applies to the PS5 version. The PC version may differ.
