SILENT HILL: Townfall: Do You Need to Play the Others First?
No. SILENT HILL: Townfall is a standalone story with a new protagonist. What the series does share, and which earlier game to pick if you want context.

The short answer
You do not need to play the earlier games. The official description is a new standalone story: Simon Ordell returns to the Scottish island town of St. Amelia in 1996 to “put things right”. No prior character has to show up first, and no official material says you must know another game’s plot.
What you do need to accept is the series vocabulary: fog, psychological horror, scarce resources, and the pressure of sensing threats through a device. Townfall swaps the classic radio for the CRTV, a pocket television you tune by hand to read unstable signals, spot nearby threats and pick up narrative clues.
What carries over from the series
| Element | How it appears in Townfall |
|---|---|
| Threat-sensing device | The radio becomes the CRTV and needs manual tuning |
| Fog and visibility | Sea fog on a 1996 Scottish island, plus dark interiors |
| Avoiding straight fights | Stealth, detours and sound lures are listed alongside combat |
| Multiple endings | The developer describes five outcomes, three reachable first |
If you do want context, which game first
Two entries are the publisher’s current focus: the SILENT HILL 2 remake and SILENT HILL f. Both differ from Townfall in setting and period. SILENT HILL 2 puts its fog in an American town; SILENT HILL f sits in 1960s Japan.
The choice is simple. Want psychological mystery and small-town dread first? Play 2. Want horror in a different cultural setting? Play f.
There is no required order. The three are not a plot you have to move through sequentially. Which one you start with mostly changes how familiar the series’ techniques feel.
What is still unanswered
The publisher has not itemised easter eggs or references between Townfall and the other games. Any claim that this is a follow-up to a specific character lacks official support, and we do not use leaks.
